Sociology of Contemporary Societies (SCS)

This program provides knowledge in the present-day field of sociology and social anthropology, including both theory and research methods. There are three specialisations: Civil Society and Politics, Anthropology of Space and Mobility, Identities, Health and Bodies, or a double degree in Sociology of Contemporary Societies with the University of Florence. You can find employment in the education sector, state and public administration, the nonprofit sector, corporate organisations, or academia.

The program features a strong core of sociology and social anthropological courses. In all specializations, you can choose either to focus on quantitative or qualitative research methodology. For the full curriculum of the program, please click here.

Civil Society and Politics: provides you with a deep understanding of how contemporary complex societies work. You will acquire the theoretical and practical skills in political sociology, anthropology of nationalism, and the non-profit sector.  
Anthropology of Space and Mobility: brings in-depth knowledge of the globalized world, its dynamics, migratory movements, social mobility, enables you to understand them and apply them in the field of urban planning, migratory politics, and analysing global developments. 
Identities, Health and Bodies: develops the profound knowledge and practical skills required to conduct sociological and social anthropological research in the field of medical anthropology, health sociology, lifestyle studies, sociology of sport, and gender studies.
Sociology of Contemporary Societies: a double degree with the second year at the University of Florence. It focuses on social theory, EU anthropology, global and European citizenship, urban life analysis, population, society and family studies, issues of emotions and social change. Upon graduation, you will receive diplomas from both universities.

You will gain knowledge of the major social problems facing present-day societies. With the understanding of both quantitative and qualitative sociological research methods, you will be able to competently conduct sociological and social anthropological research and cooperate effectively on both analytic and problem solving tasks, allowing you to build a career as researchers, experts, analysts or a project managers in the public sector, NGOs, and state or private companies. You can also pursue a fruitful academic career and PhD studies.
