Sociology

Our PhD program in Sociology combines advanced research training with active participation in research teams through a partnership between the Faculty of Social Sciences and the Institute of Sociology of the Czech Academy of Sciences. The program develops expertise in sociological theory and methodology, enabling you to conduct independent research on contemporary social issues and contribute to international scholarly debates. You will gain strong analytical and methodological skills that prepare you for careers in academia, research institutes, public organizations, consultancies, and the private sector.

Program description

This PhD program is based on collaboration between the Faculty of Social Sciences and the Institute of Sociology of the Czech Academy of Sciences, offering joint postgraduate education and research training. You will gain exposure to a wide range of topics and direct involvement in active research teams, with projects grounded in theoretically relevant basic research shaped by current debates in sociology and aimed at making meaningful contributions to the field. 

The program develops sociological thinking as a scientific discipline, combining fundamental research in key areas of the social sciences with highly qualified applications. It emphasizes both scientific rigor and social relevance, equipping you with a strong understanding of contemporary theories and methodologies and the ability to independently produce high-quality, internationally recognized research.

After graduation

You will be equipped to identify, analyze, and interpret social problems, track their development, and compare them across societies, using strong theoretical and methodological skills to apply appropriate frameworks, analyze data, and present results clearly to diverse audiences. You will be capable of critical thinking, independent inquiry, and creative problem-solving, enabling you to address assigned tasks, formulate new questions, collaborate effectively, publish research, and adapt your work to academic, governmental, non-profit, and commercial contexts.

Therefore, you will be qualified to conduct and teach both basic and applied sociological research at universities, research institutes, and other professional settings requiring advanced theoretical and methodological expertise. You can pursue careers in academia, consultancy, market and media research, or analytical and expert roles in organizations and corporations.
