Jens Belon: My experience studying at the Institute of Sociological Studies (ISS)
Jens Belon studied the BA in Social Sciences at the Institute of Sociological Studies. Read about his experience in and beyond the program.
I chose to study at the Institute of Sociological Studies at Charles University for several reasons. First, the opportunity to study in English while living in Prague, in my opinion one of the most beautiful cities in Europe, was very appealing. At the same time, Charles University’s reputation and long history as one of the oldest universities in Europe meant access to a strong academic network and many opportunities beyond the classroom, such as Erasmus exchanges, research opportunities, and international collaboration.
Another aspect I appreciated is that the English-language programs at ISS are relatively young. In my experience, this creates a close-knit environment where program leaders are approachable and open to feedback. This makes it feel like students and faculty are collectively shaping and improving the program together.
One of the most valuable parts of my studies has been the international exposure. Through the program I had the opportunity to participate in two Erasmus exchanges — a short intensive program in Łódź, Poland, and a semester abroad at the University of Copenhagen. Both experiences allowed me to study in different academic environments and engage with students from across Europe, which broadened my perspective significantly.
Even within Prague, the international character of the program stands out. Many of my classes included students from different countries, which made debates and discussions far more dynamic and helped bring multiple perspectives into the classroom.
Studying at ISS has also opened several opportunities beyond coursework. During my studies I worked as a research assistant, participated in the KVASS excursion; a seminar trip in the Czech countryside where students discuss research ideas and develop their theses, and took on leadership roles within the university, including serving as a Faculty Student Emissary and Charles University Student Ambassador.
One thing that surprised me positively is the level of flexibility in the program. Students can tailor their course selection to their interests while still maintaining a balanced schedule. Personally, I was able to complete my Bachelor’s degree in Social Sciences within the recommended three years while combining my studies with a part-time job and involvement in an international NGO.
I would recommend studying at ISS to international students interested in society, politics, and international perspectives, especially those who are curious about Central Europe and eager to explore the opportunities the program offers both academically and professionally.
