Student societies: The Karlovian

The Karlovian is a student-led platform within the Philosophy, Politics and Economics (PPE) program at the Faculty of Social Sciences, Charles University that connects academic life with the wider political, intellectual, and professional world. Through writing, interviews, and collaborative projects, the Karlovian group aims to enrich student life while helping PPE students develop analytical, editorial, and communicative skills that extend beyond the classroom. The initiative combines serious intellectual engagement with practical exposure, creating opportunities for students to publish, to learn from experts, and to better understand both academic and professional pathways.

The Karlovian seeks to:

OUR WRITERS: PPE in Practice

At the core of the Karlovian is its writing platform, where students publish articles across the disciplines of Politics, Philosophy, and Economics. The Writing Area includes opinion pieces, analytical articles, explainers, interviews, and reviews, offering students the opportunity to explore PPE topics in depth while developing strong writing and editorial skills. The aim is to promote rigorous, accessible, and pluralistic debate that connects academic concepts with contemporary issues.

UKOMPASS: Academic-Diplomatic Dialogue

UKompass is a flagship project of the Karlovian that builds bridges between students and practitioners in diplomacy, international politics, and public policy. The project creates structured dialogue between PPE students and diplomats, ambassadors, and policy professionals through interviews and discussion sessions. By translating theory into practice, UKompass allows students to engage directly with real-world perspectives on diplomacy, ethics, negotiation, and international cooperation, while also fostering long-term connections between the university and diplomatic institutions.

UKONNECT: Faculty-Student Engagement

UKonnect focuses on connecting students with their professors beyond the classroom. Through short interview formats, students gain insight into who their professors are, their areas of expertise, teaching philosophies, expectations, and academic journeys. The project helps students better understand how to approach their courses, make the most of academic opportunities, and explore potential professional paths linked to faculty expertise

ISIC&U: Student Life and Economic Benefits

ISIC&U is a practical initiative designed to help students understand the economic advantages of being a student and an ISIC card holder. Through articles and informational content, the Karlovian highlights discounts, opportunities, and benefits relevant to everyday student life, making academic engagement compatible with financial awareness and accessibility.

COLLABORATIONS with Student Clubs

The Karlovian actively collaborates with other student organisations and clubs across the faculty and university. These partnerships allow for joint events, shared content, and cross-community engagement, strengthening the student network within FSV and beyond.

The Karlovian welcomes students who want to write, edit, conduct interviews, or contribute to its projects—whether they are experienced or just starting out. Incoming PPE students are especially encouraged to join and shape the platform from the beginning of their studies.
