Program spotlight: Transnational History
We are just launching a new two-year master’s degree program in Transnational History (TNH) — the first of its kind at Charles University. The program will commence in the academic year 2026/2027. Do you want to be part of this exciting new beginning? Although this study program is new, it is backed by a team of experts with many years of teaching and research experience in the field, as well as outstanding international connections. Students will benefit from a dynamic academic environment and opportunities to engage with global scholarly networks. The program is designed to equip graduates with the analytical tools and historical insight needed to understand complex transnational processes from the 19th century to the present. The programme focuses on topics that transcend national and cultural boundaries — such as migration, globalisation, war, and social and political transformations. It fosters advanced research methods, critical thinking, and intercultural competence.
Why might TNH be the right choice for you?
Here are the key aspects of the program that will foster your development and help you prepare for your future career:
1. Unique linkage of historical research with contemporary challenges
By studying the Transnational History program, you will explore historical processes and phenomena in transnational contexts, gaining a deep understanding of the historical roots of today’s global challenges. This program uniquely connects historical research to contemporary issues such as economic globalization, migration, war and its consequences, and social and political transformations—topics that transcend national boundaries. It addresses a broad range of questions posed by international organizations, diplomats, government agencies, NGOs, scholars, media professionals, and the business community.
2. Combination of subject knowledge with advanced historical research methods
You will become proficient in historical research methods, textual interpretation, and source analysis, while also developing critical and analytical thinking skills and intercultural competence. In addition, you will gain in-depth knowledge of selected focus areas such as Social and Economic Change, Migration and Minorities, and Conflict and Violence. You might also examine how the past is used and interpreted in the present, combining academic insight with practical application. Alongside your degree, you’ll even have the opportunity to earn a supplementary Certificate in Digital Humanities, if you decide to take courses providing students with essential data literacy and digital competencies that are increasingly valued across disciplines in both academic research and professional practice.
3. Tailored curriculum
You will have the flexibility to adapt the curriculum to your specific needs and interests. Core compulsory courses emphasize methods, concepts, and academic writing, while elective courses allow you to shape your own academic and professional profile. Throughout your studies, you will enjoy the advantages of small study groups and an individualized approach. Your education will thus be aligned with your individual career plans and aspirations.
4. Outstanding academic institution
TNH is delivered by the dedicated and friendly Institute of International Studies. The Institute provides a broad spectrum of disciplinary and territorial knowledge that ensures that you make as much as possible from your studies. Members of our Institute are experts in their field, advising public institutions, participating in international research consortia, and regularly appearing in the media.
5. Friendly group of students and a lot of social activities
You will become a member of a cohesive body of students from around the world. The multicultural environment enables students to live and study alongside diverse cultures and worldviews. Moreover, the Institute organizes social activities throughout the year, including trips outside of Prague, for all international students. Therefore, you will be able to establish long-lasting ties with fellow students from other programs. Additionally, you’ll have the opportunity to meet Czech students through seminars, social events, or language tandems.
6. Study abroad opportunities
What would studying Transnational History be without international experiences? As a TNH student, you can take advantage of a wide range of student mobility opportunities and scholarships. The international activities available to you will include study periods abroad lasting one semester or a whole academic year, practical placements, summer schools, and research trips abroad. The Institute of International Studies will help you find the most suitable international experience through its various international connections.
7. Access to a wide range of professions
After completing TNH, you will be equipped to pursue a career in international organizations, diplomacy, public administration, NGOs, cultural institutions, academia and research, as well as multinational companies and media. You will also be well-prepared for doctoral studies, including the English-taught PhD in Modern History at the Institute of International Studies.
